Home News, pp 3-4 - On every front the Conservative government is following through its
policies with loutish determination. On the opposite page we go into
the full meaning of the new housing bill, and Fred Halliday discusses
what the Heath regime will get up to next and the derisory tactics of
the Labour opposition in parliament.
On page 4 our crime reporter brings news of some of the internal
troubles currently afflicting the London police. Also on this page,
the Oz appeal. Our man was in the court room and bodies forth the
scene and what the decision means for the (underground) press.
Industry, p 5 - Why did London airport come to a stand-still? Will there be a full
scale engineering strike? Our industrial correspondent fills out these |
questions, and talks about new developments in the employers’ -
offensive.
Capitalism, pp 6-7 — Last week 3000 company directors, lunch boxes in tow, gathered in
the Albert Hall for their annual bull session. Anthony Barber and
Billy Graham zapped them with Marx and Mao. Jon Halliday and
Francine Winham were there from 7 DAYS to cover this hilarious
event.
Foreign News, pp 8-10 A year ago Chileans elected their first Marxist president. Despite
immense interest on the Left, there has been scant news on what has
actually happened. On page 8 we print a full report on Allende’s first
year. World news as well, and from the US a report on the recent
slumps on Wall St and what they mean for Nixon and his hopes for
1972.
Photo-Feature We tell in their words and our pictures the story of a family for
whom the question asked in our first issue, ““Should we make love in
front of children”’ is academic, since they have to anyway.
Centre Pages, pp 12-14 For most people Jarrow is a name which means Hunger Marches, and
the Thirties (dark days of). Today some Jarrow people are thinking
of another march. There are still 12 in every 100 out of work. Peter
Fuller and John Garrett went there last week and bring back one
small slice of the misery that Heath’s deliberately planned
unemployment means for millions in this country.
Life, p 15 What have Brezhnev, Princess Anne and Heath all got in common?
Read our report on Potency on Wheels.
Sport, p 16 Jack Bodell is in the ring next Tuesday to fight Quarrie. Billy Hack
went up to Swadlincote to see him. Bodell gave him and our
photographer a jovial welcome on the farm and in the Rose and
Crown.
‘Ideas, p17 Peter Wollen explains the cornerstone of Freud’s discoveries, the
Oedipus Complex.
Arts, pp 18-20 Currently running in London, after a tour of the country, is Trevor
Griffiths’ ambitious play, Occupations. It is about Gramsci, about
revolution. But has the attempt to transpose Italian revolutionary
history to the stage really succeeded? Tom Nairn reviews, on pp.18
and 19, both the play and the political ideas which inspired it. Also
on the arts pages a bash at Woman’s Hour and at the Playboy
exhibition.
Special Feature, pp 21-23 This week Miss World is with us again, for the 21st time. We give
over the Special Feature this week to a discussion of what the -
Competition is really all about, and we talk to the participants and
organizers.
And by the way, some readers were puzzled by our photographs
from a US gaol last week. Why was the man screaming? Because his
mouth was being searched. Why were the men bending over?
Because they were being searched too.
Excellent condition.
