DESIGNS FOR LIVING 8
Writer and DJ Robert Elms tells how young designers have rejected the art college establishment in favour of making distinctive clothes for their club-going contemporaries. They're independent, inventive and successful.
SPANDAU BALLET
The first band to emerge from the new clubs, they chose their early venues carefully and created a reputation that had every cheque book in the music business waving at them. Steve Sutherland reports on a band now looking for major album-chart success.
STRANGE EVENTS
The partnership of Steve Strange and Rusty Egan goes right back to before Billy's club, when they were the two prime movers of the new nightlife. Today Rusty is a record-stall owner in the Great Gear Market on London's King's Road and a busy drummer-about-town. Here he tells all about his Visage-fronting friend in an exclusive personal account for New sounds, new styles.
Rhythmic Roots:
FROM BOWIE TO THE NEW FUNK Steve Taylor traces the history of the new dance music, including illustrated guides to KRAFTWERK, BRIAN ENO, DAVID BOWIE, ROXY MUSIC.
NIGHTCLUBBING
The Blitz in London's Covent Garden was the best-known of the new clubs; here we file reports from the growing number of venues outside the capital.

ME, SIR! After a couple of years working for Paris fashion houses, Perry Haines has launched himself into such diverse projects as styling fashion spreads for the Evening Standard, co-editing i-D magazine and helping some of the major bands develop their 'look'. Here are his personal comments on style.
DURAN DURAN
The newest arrivals to prominence (though as they'll point out by no means a spin-off) are Duran Duran, a Birmingham group dedicated to letting the good times roll. Looking for an escape? Well here's a fairy story as retold by Jane Headley.
ULTRAVOX
The name's not new, but the line-up that produced 'Vienna' has close ties with the new movement. Two of its members are also in Visage and the band headlined Steve Strange's People's Palace Party on St Valentine's Day. Terence Eaton studies the association.
i-D = STYLE
i-D is a fashion magazine which in only two issues has developed a reputation for capturing new fashions as they first appear on the streets and not on the fashion-house drawing boards. We asked the team who produce this independent magazine to take two pages and show us how.
FRUSTRATED BALLERINAS?
Photojournalist Virginia Turbett took to the streets to record reactions to the bright sparks featured in New sounds, new styles.
VISAGE
Are they a band or aren't they? The artists involved are all remarkably busy elsewhere, yet Visage already have two singles and album to their name. A vehicle for Steve Strange, or a successful backing track for the new dance? Terence Eaton investigates.
LAST WORDS Is this the tip of an iceberg, or will it all be over next week?
