16 MY LIFE WITH PICASSO
The greatest influence on twentieth-century art, by far, is Pablo Picasso ; and the greatest influence on Picasso is his own private life. Most people can expect their privacy to be somewhat respected while they are still alive ; but not Picasso. " I've had the courage," he once said, "to live my life in broad daylight." The latest person to write about him is Francoise Gilot, who lived with Picasso for 10 years and bore him two children. Now, a decade later, she has produced (with Carlton Lake, the American art critic) an account of her relationship with this extraordinary man which is a revelation not only of Picasso's character but also of the source of his work. The Observer Magazine will print substantial parts of Frangoise Gilot 's story in the next few issues.
