As you can see from a quick check of the cover, Part Two of Tanias
WorldThe Inside Story is not inside this issue. The arrest of Patty
Hearst as Part One went to press rendered the original Part Two almost
totally inoperative. So authors Howard Kohn and David Weir are cur-
rently scurrying, delving and revising, and we promise their complete,
updated conclusion next time. Meanwhile, you might want to read this
issue's inside story, by Peter Biskind and Marc N. Weiss, of the Weather
Underground and their daring new film.

Frankly, its getting harder and harder to manage the news these days
and we just barely pulled it off with Part One. Even before Patty Hearsts
arrest we felt that The Inside Story would be one of the most important
exclusives we'd ever published. Naturally we wanted to release word of it to
the press and public on our own terms, in a way that would promote maxi-
mum coverage and interest (and, okay, profits, you cynical bastards).

Step one: Senior Editor Paul Scanlon held a special meeting of the San
Francisco officeeditors, artists, the switchboard, the mailroom, everyone
a week before press time in which basic ground rules were explained to
maintain tight lips and tidy habits. Everything worked smoothly until step two: 
Security guards were hired to patrol our printing plant in St. Louis
and make sure no copies of the issue were pilfered as they started rolling
off the presses on Wednesday, September 24th. No copies were, but an
alert reporter for a local TV station in St. Louis heard about the guards
and started asking questions. That made us a bit nervous because we
wanted the story held until Monday, September 29th, when Howard and
David were to appear on NBC's Today show.

By Friday more reporters were asking questions, so we took step three
Operation Candormainly lying our ass off and denying everything. Sun-
day night AP got wind of the story, but by that time things were pretty
much under control. We led the news on all three networks Monday eve-
ning. In New York the issue nearly sold out on the first day. And Howard
Kohns father, a farmer near Bay City, Michigan, first heard of his son
achievement and pending TV appearance while milking a cow around five
o'clock Monday morning.

In the first edition 11/9/1967 Wenner wrote that Rolling Stone "is not just about music, but about things & attitudes that the music scene embraces. However it quickly distanced itself from the underground newspapers of the time embracing traditional journalism & avoiding the radical politics championed by the underground press.
