George Benson
By Robert Palmer 7
Since his 1976 smash vocal hit,
This Masquerade, guitar great
George Benson has become
jazz biggest crossover success. But
Palmer got the impression that Benson
hasn't become a pop star just to
make money, that his crossover stems
from a need to be loved. The money.
of course, does come in handy when-
ever a new Mercedes beckons, and
for Benson that seems to be happening
more and more.
By Howard Kohn 7
When you're an investigative
reporter, the people you
write about usually hate
you, says associate editor Kohn, so it
was nice to go to the Rocky Flats and
Barnwell demonstrations against
nuclear power. The people were actu-
ally happy to talk to me. In fact. this
was the friendliest and most idealistic
crowd I've seen since the early days of
the antiwar movement. To me, the
issues are the sameits just a different
kind of war.
By Jamaica Kincaid 48
This short story is about Jamaica
Kincaid love and terror of the
sea. Even though she grew up in
the West Indies on the island of Anti-
gua, she had only been in seawater
a half-dozen times before she came to
the United States thirteen years ago.
She still doesnt know how to swim.
