𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮 There’s a glut of Bunuel in the West End: ‘𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗮’ at the Academy, ‘𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗼𝗲’ at the ICA, and four others at the Paris Pullman, including ‘𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮’ which also shows at the ICA Film Society. The Pullman also has 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗸𝗶’𝘀 ‘𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀’ and the Academy begins its 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗞𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗻 season with the amazing ‘𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆’, which is definitely not to be missed. Good straight stuff includes 𝗛𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗰𝗼𝗰𝗸’𝘀 ‘𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘇𝘆’ and 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗮𝘂𝘁’𝘀 ‘𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗹’ at the Paramount and Curzon respectively. The Electric takes it easy with the 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘅 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀—this week includes ‘𝗚𝗼 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁’ and ‘𝗔 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮’. The London Film Makers Co-op lays out a good, heavy retrospective of films from ’68—American, Canadian, German and English. The Politkino has 𝗗𝘇𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗻’𝘀 ‘𝗪𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗞𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗱𝘁’, film poetry of the events of 1919 and the ICA Film Society double-bills Anger and Warhol with ‘𝗠𝘆 𝗛𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗿’ and ‘𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗶𝗼 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴’—should be a riot. Local cinema bests are 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶’𝘀 ‘𝗟’𝗘𝗰𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗲’ which is on with 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗶𝗹𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻’𝘀 ‘𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹’ at the Venus. And late night there’s ‘𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗜𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝘁’ at Muswell Hill Odeon. 

𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 & 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮 For once an opera lecture can be guaranteed to be stimulating, as it’s 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗿 speaking her mind at the Coliseum on Monday at 1 pm. Should be a stimulating lunchtime. ‘𝗧𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗺’, to be performed at ‘𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲’. See ‘𝗜𝗖𝗘𝗦’ feature (Dance). As for Dance—worth sampling some of the mixed bag at The Place, it’s where a variety of programmes using contemporary sounds provide the dance wing of 𝗜𝗖𝗘𝗦-𝟳𝟮. 

𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 This weekend provides the 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹, and if you don’t know all about it by now, try the listings or the ad on page 56. On Sunday at the Rainbow there is the daunting prospect of 𝗛𝗮𝘄𝗸𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱 and 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗹 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗹𝗮𝘀, who with a name like that don’t need much else. But there are rumours that the word outrageous needs to be redefined after seeing them. 

𝗥𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗼 & 𝗧𝗩 On Sunday, Radio 3 relays 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗴𝗲’𝘀 ‘𝗛𝗣𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗗’ from the Roundhouse as Sunday’s Prom. 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝗶 𝗥𝗶𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗵𝗹, official film-maker to the Nazis, made a marvellous film of the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The BBC are showing the first part of a new version, re-edited by her, on Friday. Collaboration! On Tuesday, 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗱 talks on ‘𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵’ about his new solo LP. ‘𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’ features the craft craftsmen of Clerkenwell, and ‘𝗔 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲’ looks at two novices in a Benedictine Monastery. 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗱, the Head of Avis Rent-a-Car, who made it profitable and then sacked himself, talks about American business on ‘𝗨𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻’ on Thursday. Earlier, the BBC show a repeat of 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘀’ play ‘𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻’ and the third episode of 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁’𝘀 ‘𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺’. Radio 3’s ‘𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀’ presents a discussion on the need for broadcasting to reflect a ‘consensus’. 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗥𝗼𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘁’𝘀 ‘𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮’—see Edinburgh Festival feature. The cover this week is by 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗵 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁.
